- How does it work?
Experts continue to study the complicated role ketamine plays in your health. Simply, ketamine will block neuro receptors in different areas that are responsible for sensory, learning and memory. When these paths are blocked, it produces a positive chemical balance for neurons to grow. This encourages the repair of pathways and can help minimize the effects of many disorders. Ketamine has also been discovered to reduce inflammatory issues which can relieve pain of a chronic nature.
- How effective is Ketamine?
Very. Trials have shown that 70 percent of recipients have obtained positive results after just one ketamine infusion. They have also found that patients that follow the recommended program with follow up visits can expect 85-90 percent relief from symptoms. Each patient is different and some will require maintenance infusions. These typically are 3-6 months apart.
- What will my visit be like?
At Chattanooga Ketamine Center, while we want you relaxed during your visit, our top priority is your safety. You will have a dedicated room for your treatment. Each session lasts about 2 hours. You may feel sleepy during the infusion, that is normal. Other may have a sensation of floating and/or lightheadedness. Some patients may be talkative while others prefer to rest. Dr. Pooler will be present during your entire treatment. These effects will subside gradually after the treatment is complete. Some patients choose to nap during the treatment, but the amount administered is not enough to put you completely under like in surgery.
- How long do the infusions take?
An average visit will last about 2 hours.
- Why is Ketamine not FDA approved and what about insurance coverage?
Presently, ketamine infusion therapy is not covered by insurance. Our office creates your "super bill" and tyou submit it hrough your patient portal with Osmind, Osmind submits your bill for out of network coverage.
- What kinds of side effects are to be expected?
The most common effects related to ketamine infusion are sleepiness and a feeling of euphoria. Though not everyone experiences side effects, if you do they will dissipate shortly after the treatment. Other effects that are less common include blurriness, dizzy feelings, and mild nausea.
- Should I drive to the appointment?
As with other procedures that involve sedatives, we require that another person drive you home after the infusion. We also advise that you do not drive for the rest of the day after your appointment.
- Are there conditions that would disqualify me from Ketamine infusions?
Your safety is our top priority. There are conditions that would rule out an individual from being able to receive ketamine. They are: uncontrolled high blood pressure, seizure disorder, unmanaged psychosis, and current pregnancy. Dr Pooler will do a screening to ensure you are a candidate to receive ketamine treatments.
- How do I pay for a Ketamine infusion?
Insurance does not currently cover Ketamine infusions. We provide you a super bill. Using your Osmind patient portal , Osmind will submit your bill to your insurer.
- Will I need a referral?
We do not require a referral.
